A prayer to start with
God of all comfort, I’m hurting and I don’t have the words. Thank You that You are near to the brokenhearted and that You don’t rush me. Comfort me the way a mother comforts her child. Bind up what is broken in me: [name what hurts]. Walk with me through this valley, and when I’m ready, let the comfort You give me spill over to someone else. Hold me until the day You wipe away every tear. Amen.

Questions people ask
What does the Bible say about comfort?
It calls God the God of all comfort (2 Corinthians 1:3). Comfort in Scripture is God’s presence with us in pain, not a promise that pain will be avoided.
What is a comforting Bible verse for someone who is grieving?
Psalm 34:18 and Matthew 5:4 are gentle places to start, because both meet grief honestly. If you’re writing to someone, one verse and a few words of your own are usually enough.
Why does God comfort us?
2 Corinthians 1:4 gives one reason: so we can comfort others with the comfort we received. Your hardest season can become someone else’s help.
